Settings should always be chosen with care. Consider the emotion you want your viewpoint character to feel and how setting choices, weather elements, and symbolism might build a specific mood in the scene, create tension and conflict, or even raise the stakes.
SIGHTS:
A waiting area with chairs, a flag, statuary, a map of the city or county and Rotary Club plaques
A public washroom and water fountain
A glass partition that has to be spoken through to gain entrance
A bell to be rung for service
Doors with electronic locks and keypads
The dispatch room filled with computers, phones, and TVs
A secure armory for weapons and riot gear
A janitor's closet that contains a mop and bucket on wheels, a janitorial cart with cleaners and supplies, etc.
An interview rooms with a plain table, chairs, handcuff rings, pads of paper, and pens
A processing area, including a fingerprinting station and a wall with a measurement bar for mug shots
Holding cells that consist of concrete walls, a door with a window or metal sliding viewing plate, and a steel table with stools attached to the floor
A drunk tank with concrete walls, tile flooring, a secure door, a metal toilet and sink, tile floors with a central drain, and a video camera bubble on the roof
A recording room with computers and screens that record the audio and visuals of an interview or witness account, pens and paper for the observer to make notations, and a desk and chairs
Transcription rooms where officers dictate reports into recording devices and transcribers enter recorded reports into computers
Debriefing rooms for bringing officers up to speed on current cases (a large table and chairs, a dry erase board, a bulletin board, boxes of files, pens and notepads)
A secure evidence room containing boxes of evidence, a rolling cart filled with evidence in baggies, numbered boxes of evidence bags for each case file, crowded metal shelving, evidence lockers, and a cataloging system
