HELPFUL TIP:

A deeply embedded fear often stems from trauma, so it can be helpful to explore emotional wounds that may be a factor. Your character might also become risk-averse, which can create problems in their relationships and limit their fulfillment. And for a character to achieve their story goal, they must overcome any fear-based thinking that's holding them back. The Character Builder is a great resource for pulling all these factors together.
NOTES:
Believing in a higher power can bring comfort, peace, and an inner strength. But it also comes with certain behavioral expectations. A character who is hyper-focused on divine judgment or punishment for stepping out of line won't experience comfort or peace. Their fear will not only inform their choices as they try to live within rigid parameters, but it will taint their view of their god and other people, so they see everyone and everything through a lens of judgment and disapproval.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:
Abstaining from punishable offenses
Holding themselves to an impossibly high moral standard
Perfectionist tendencies
Highly valuing justice
Exceeding expectations when it comes to religious activities (attending services, praying, confessing, fasting, serving others, etc.)
Proselytizing
Making all their decisions through the lens of religious guidance
Surrounding themselves with like-minded people
Fearing death and the afterlife
Pointing out the sins of others
Reveling in someone else's downfall to feel better about themselves
Avoiding people and places that may lead to temptation (parties, clubs, people from other religions, etc.)
Refusing to acknowledge doubts about the faith
