This entry addresses regional, national, or global recessions and economy crashes. A national recession is defined as a country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) declining for two or more quarters. A severe recession is sometimes referred to as a depression or economy crash, which is usually caused by a financial crisis where companies and individuals over-borrow and create a domino effect within the economy.

Tourism in a tourist-heavy region halting due to an unstable political environment or unsafe conditions, such as a natural disaster or local disease outbreak
A global pandemic causing a recession
Widespread war causing financial instability
A stock market crash devastating the investments of its country's citizens
A local workforce being decimated—such as a large car factory or fishing industry—putting many out of work and forcing them to move away to look for jobs

Being out of work with limited job prospects 
Having to learn new skills to adapt to a new job or life circumstance 
Taking on a second job, leaving less time for family and personal interests
Frequent arguments with loved ones over the character's financial situation
Having to ask for a loan from a friend or family member
The supply chain of non-essential goods being interrupted, causing a shortage of luxuries such as electronics, popular toys, or other consumer goods 
Reviewing the budget and cutting out things that can no longer be afforded (a child's singing lessons, a promised vacation, etc.) 
Having to rely on friends or family to help the character through hard times
The character being forced to change their life plans or expectations for the future
The character fearing for the health or safety of themselves or their family
