HELPFUL TIP:

Don’t be afraid to pair weather conditions with your setting choice to contrast or reinforce a character’s emotions. Hopelessness might be mirrored in the relentless drizzle of rain and the resulting heavy drag of one’s clothes; alternatively, this feeling can stand out in stark contrast to sunlight dancing over fresh snow. Can weather also provide symbolism, thereby enriching the reader’s experience? Think about your goal for the scene and the mood you are trying to create, and then layer your description with meaningful choices.
SIGHTS:
Large flakes of snow causing white-out conditions
Poor light quality
Gray skies
Trails and roads that quickly fill with snow, making navigation difficult
Wind that pushes snow sideways and creates drifts
Tree branches bending under the weight of snow
A thick carpet on cars and buildings
Landmarks obscured or erased by snow
Structures reduced to lumps of shadow
Flakes peppering one's clothing and hair
Animal tracks that fill and disappear
Frost clinging to eyelashes and facial hair
Plumes of fogged breath in front of one's face

SMELLS:
An ozone-like scent
Air so crisp it causes pain in the nostrils

TASTES:
The tang of cold snow licked from one's lips

TEXTURES AND SENSATIONS:
Stinging flakes pelting one's frozen cheeks and clinging to the eyelashes or hair
Skin that grows chapped and numb
Tingles of pain in one's fingertips and toes as temperatures drop
The exhausting slog of pushing through deep snow to break a trail
